Read manga online, one chapter at a time
A slow guide for new and returning readers. Start with the labels printed on a manga, then choose the reading mode that does the art justice.
Start with the shelfLabels and genres are not the same thing
The shelf scrolls sidewaysShōnen, shōjo, seinen and josei name the magazine a series first ran in, and so the readers it was written for. A seinen series can be a romance; a shōjo series can be a thriller. Read the label for tone, read the genre for plot.
- Shōnen少年
- Teen boys' magazines. Clear goals, rivals, a hero who gets stronger.
- Shōjo少女
- Teen girls' magazines. Feelings drawn into the art itself: flowers, screentone, long close-ups.
- Seinen青年
- Adult men's magazines. Slower, darker, more willing to leave a question open.
- Josei女性
- Adult women's magazines. Work, money, relationships, the weight of ordinary days.
Pick the reading mode that suits the book
Page by page
The way most manga was drawn. Each page is composed as a whole, and two-page spreads stay intact.
Best for: anything printed in black and white.
Long scroll
Made for webtoons and most manhwa, which are drawn as one tall strip. Page-based manga in this mode loses its spreads and its page-turn reveals.
Best for: full-colour vertical comics.
Right to left
The original direction for Japanese manga. Some older translations were flipped to read left to right, which mirrors every page of the art.
Best for: reading a series as the artist drew it.
Keeping your place in a long series
- Chapters and volumesChapters first appear in a magazine. A volume, or tankōbon, collects several of them later, sometimes with redrawn pages.
- Chapters ending in .5Usually side stories or extras. Skipping one rarely breaks the main plot.
- OmakeBonus pages at the end of a volume: author notes, sketches, short jokes.
- HiatusThe series is paused, often for the artist's health. It is not the same as cancelled.
あとがき
- Do I need an account to read manga online?
- On most reading sites, no. An account mainly remembers your place across devices.
- What does "raw" mean?
- The original Japanese pages, before any translation.
- And "scanlation"?
- A fan translation of scanned pages. Quality depends on the group doing it, and so does the speed.
- Is a phone enough?
- For long scroll, yes. For page-based manga, a tablet or a phone turned sideways keeps the text readable without zooming.
